It was such a simple pattern, and took me 2 days to make. Yesterday I did the applique panels and spent part of this afternoon sewing them all together. And that was with plenty of tea breaks.
Look at the animals....
can you see the fancy rainbow coloured thread? (Ok, you can't, but imagine the rainbow coloured thread - it's a king tut, colour number 918 and I got it from asding)
I think my favourite is the hippo. Might have a lot to do with that big gingham background.
My only mess up was the elephant is facing the wrong way. But I think it wasn't reversed on the pattern. It doesn't matter, elephant tells me he is over the moon to be able to look at the beautiful tangerine giraffe. Hippo agrees.
My niece isn't actually due until October, so I can rest a while and decide on the backing. Minky? Chenille? Just regular cotton? Hmmm... what do you think? I'm only going to quilt it simply, around the blocks. A cozy backing might be nice. Give me your opinions, I do really value them.
So, if you are in need of a quick and easy project for a new baby, try this pattern. In fact, just have a look at all the other patterns over at Michael Miller. I'm thinking that deer one would be rather nice, or the fridge art one, or doggie daisy. Or about 10 others.

It's GORGEOUS Katy!!!! And I CAN see the multicoloured thread - and I love how it looks! Where did you find that?
I love the background fabric on the elephant block and I think Mr Elephant would have been very sad if he'd had to look the other way all the time!

I like the elephant the best! But the little birdie on the hippo is really sweet...
Great job! It is beautiful and will be treasured.
As far as the back, the texture of minkee is really nice. I used it on a few kids' quilts, and I quilted it with just the top and batting, then added the minkee (thinking it would probably be too difficult to quilt). It worked out well!
It looks gorgeous - she will treasure it I'm sure.
I used to have some gorgeous metallic rainbow thread. 'Used' b/c I found it on the floor of my bedroom after it had been in discusiion with my assistant :-(
The quilt is gorgeous and I would back it with a lovely snuggly minky. My kids adore their fleece blankets.
Absolutely beautiful...love all the fabrics and colors!!!
It's beautiful - I would want to keep it as well. Great choice of fabrics.
It is beautiful.....
No wonder she wanted to keep it x
I LURVE it, it is truly scrumptious and I think the elephant is facing exactly the right way, how rude would it be to turn your back on such a gorgeous giraffe???
Your niece will treasure this gorgeous quilt forever and ever!
I'd back it in cuddly flannel.
Lovely! SO much better with these fabrics than the example on the MM website! Maybe you could back it with some flannel, I think flannel is called different in the UK though. Anyway, have done a little shopping for the surprise I'm sending you later this summer. :)
oh! its gorgeous Katy! I think the hippo is my fave!!!
xx
i love it, that is one lucky baby! you made it so quick too x
That is just about the cutest thing I've ever seen! And it took you only 2 days?? Wow!
My goodness you put that together quick. And how cute it is!!! Love it!
Oh, it's gorgeous!!! I'm so happy Mr Elephant is facing inwards as that would have upset me if he was looking the other way!
I can see why Miss G wants to keep it - what a lucky baby :)

Is this some kind of new speed quilting? Like those extreme sport sort of jobbies??....I need to lie down, this zoo quilt business is making me very slightly dizzy..
Katy that is brilliant !!
Love all the animals & the fabrics too!
I love the purple birdy polka dots .
Oooh, Mrs. Monkey, I've missed visiting your blog! Thank goodness exam nastiness is over. As always reading through the past posts has made me want to get Edna out (she's my sewing machine). LOVE LOVE LOVE the rocket quilt and your groovy placemat :D
Will you show us a picture of all your fabric in one place one day? I bet it'll fill a good few rooms by now.
FAB-U-LOUS!!!!!
April xx
Katy it's super-cute!
I'm loving the bird on to of the hippo....
In fact that fabric you have used for the bird could look nice on the back???
Tam xo
just gorgeous Katy! I vote chenille, then again, I always do, but if cosy is what you want, chenille always fits the bill!
I hope you got a kick out of her wanting to keep it! It is beautiful and so bright and cheerful for a bubba. I think the elephant is happier now that he can see his friends.
I think you have gone against the grain though... there seems to be a large number of quilters out there that don't get a quilt finished before a birth, so there may be some jealousy! :)
Gorgeous!!! I understand MissG wanting to keep this!
Love it Katy!!! I would back it with anything that could go in the wash lots of times :)
Love it Katy! The hippo is my fave...what a lucky babe!
it looks wonderful! I like the idea of a cuddly backing!
Love love love and where did you get that great orange polka dot?
hhmmmm i think minkee, but thats coz im hooked on making baby blankets/quilts with it at the moment (when i can actually FIND it here in OZ!)...plus, i FINALLY got a round to using some more of your awesome scraps. check me out!! hope you like

Katy this is gorgeous as usual! Enjoying the heat this week? How do you manage to get so much sewn, you are a speed demon on that machine of yours :)
l o v e l y ! so colorful and fun! I haven't tried minkee, but maybe a nice flannel would be a good choice?
Katy, it's fabulous! Not surprised G wants to keep it. I love the hippo with his little birdie hitch-hiker! I think a snuggly backing would be lovely.
:)
I would vote minky but its awful to work with... what about flannel?
It looks great! lucky baby!
Fab as always. I'd back it with fleece as this keeps it quite lightweight and suitable for a newborn. (Quilts aren't recommended until babies are 12mths old)
I completely understand why miss G wants to keep this quilt. It might be a simple patterns, but those colors and fabrics make it stunning! What to do with the backing depends on what you want them to use the quilt for. I would go for a bright sweet fabric like polar fleece, except if the recipients live in a warm place on earth! However, if you use knitted fabrics, be sure to quilt it enough!
WOW Its amazing..I agree with G..You have to keep it or give it to a good friend
What a fabulous quilt! Wow. I love the colors and fabrics and ANIMALS! Lovely.
Thank you for leaving the love at my blog! I was so happy to find you. Also the thought of a Union Jack flag from Liberty fabrics, makes me drool too! Any photos?? :)
Hi Katy, just found your blog via flickr (I've marked you as a contact!) The quilt is lovely. I am a great fan of King Tut thread, unfortunately my local quilt shop doesn't sell it, so I have to stock up at quilt shows. Regards, Anne
SNEEKY !!!!! I object to that.... I would call it....ummmm...well not sneeky .....swiss cheese brain....old age...any of this working????....no???...okay....fine ..

I love the spots on the giraffe, what wonderful colours and fabrics. What a lucky niece! I went for a cosy backing to the pne I made for my niece and she uses it as a mt for rolling on too
