As I have mentioned before, I have a new niece on the way, which means baby gifts must be made, and (most obviously) one of those gifts must be a quilt.
After spotting the wise woman planning the 'giraffes, elephants and hippos - oh my!' quilt from Michael Miller (a freebie too), I decided to get in on the fusible web action, I have ordered a heap (yes, a heap) of fabrics from the ever wonderful and incredibly helpful fabric worm, and popped to the copy shop today to get the applique patterns enlarged and copied.
Cripes. I know I am crapper than crap at maths, but when I picked up the (what looked more like a poster rolled up into a tube but was actually a) giraffe and his mates, elephant and hippo, I was a little shocked by the size. It took some gentle explaining from the husband that enlarged 400% is actually 8 x bigger, not 4 x bigger (I think - I was lost as soon as he mentioned numbers). Once I got my head round the size of the shapes I'm going to have to applique, and stopped having a panic at the possibility of the bubbling of fusible web, or bits coming all unstuck where they shouldn't I am now incredibly excited to get started, but I will need to go and get more fusible web, and wait for the fabric to arrive before i can even think about getting anything done. *EDIT - 400% IS 4 TIMES BIGGER, I WASN'T LISTENING PROPERLY TO THE HUSBAND, IT SEEMS!*
Rather than follow the pattern and use the fabrics suggested, so my quilt ends up looking like this....

I (with some help from Cynthia and her web site) have picked fabrics to tie in with this one instead.....

It's a bit cheerier, more suitable for the little lady.

Pah! Did the husbandman not read the small print in the wedding vows carefully enough? It states quite clearly that the husband is responsible for all maths and number related items and in return you, in your capacity as official wife, will take on birthday detail for both extended families!
Huh? 400% is 8 times bigger? How does that work out? I am a bear of very little brain and negligible mathematical ability and I am now totally and utterly puzzled! I have no doubt that Clever Mr Ginger Monkey is entirely correct in his calculation but the concept has completely fried my mind!

I wouldn't have known that either. Why wouldn't it be four times bigger??? That is one big giraffe!
well - yes, it is 4 x bigger...it seems the husband was actually explaining that to me and telling me the measurements at the same time which involved the number 8 (8 inches is the original giraffe's height) and that made me confused. It's easily done. See - I told you I was a complete maths dunce, didn't I? He has since explained it to me in more simple terms with visual aids. I am still confused though. Poor simple girl that I am...
I'm sure it will turn out absoloutly fabulous and we will all be jealous!
p.s. love the shoes!
I always tell my husband that it's his fault if I don't listen to him
;-)
That is going to be so stinking cute!!
I heart fabricworm.

I'm glad you added the edited bit as I was getting a little upset by the 400% is 8x bigger thing...I was about to call Mr GM's mathematical expertise into question.
Phew!!
The quilt is going to be gorgeous. What a lucky niece :-)

p.s. LOVE your new header!!!
I'm not comprehending the 400% bigger thing either. My husband is trying to explain to me that if the width is 4x bigger and the height is 4x bigger, then the total pattern is 16x bigger in area. I'm not sure that all this math makes any difference. It's just one stinken' huge giraffe! ;)
I am really pleased to know that I am not the only one who zones out when numbers are mentioned. I also get so confused when quilting about the bloody math of it all!!!
well, you lost me at 400% bigger. i'm not a math whiz myself, but i'm a true believer that things work out the way it's supposed to? hahaha
it's going to be awesome!!!!!! then you can say, "well, i meant to..."
Cute and some of my favorite fabric. I have some fabric worm fabric in my cart and haven't hit the button yet. Was somewhat thankful this morning that I hadn't, but those Japanese dots are hard to resist.
Haha apparently I'm not the only commenter for who 400% being 8x bigger is confusing! Thank goodness for math minded men!
The colours you're going with look like it will be a very fun quilt.
OK, when I start reading I was thinking, something is going wrong with the enlargement. But DH explained it OK. I am an engineer, so I know stuff like that, lucky me that I quilt and that I can use my engineering skills, LOL. Next time, ask a woman, she can probably explain it better to you because we think different. LOL, but the quilt looks great;
Re. fusibles.
If you're worried about bubbling, have you tried 505 temporary adhesive?
http://www.barnyarns.co.uk/AD505-LARGE-Temporary-Spray-Adhesive-pr-21850.html
Or even 606?
http://www.barnyarns.co.uk/AD606-Temporary-Permanent-Fabric-adhesive-pr-16720.html
They're both spray adhesives which don't gum up your needle.
The second one is temporary (you can reposition it if you get it wrong) and then becomes permanently fixed once you iron it.
xx
Oh yeah, ps - love the shoes!
Bring back sole Monday!
Yea! I LOVE that animal fabric--I have a small piece somewhere. Not as big as that giraffe. Sorry about that. :-) I know the animals aren't quite life-sided but it feels that way when one is tracing and cutting. Oh, and I had no problem with the fusible (I used two different kinds...whatever I had enough of...cuz I didn't have enough of either one...cuz, you know, that giraffe...) and I just did a simple buttonhole around the edge. It went fairly quickly. One final thing on the elephant ear...I knew I wouldn't be making this again, so I cut into my pattern around part of the head and ear. Just enough that I could trace the "inner" ear (if you will). I added on the buttonhole stitching for that ear to make it look like I continued it around. But you're clever and probably don't need to know any of this. Can't wait to see your cheery version!
nice shoes madam (whatever happened to sole monday anyway????)
I read your bit about 800% and thought my maths ability must have deteriorated significantly as I just couldn't fathom it (believe it or not was once a hot mathie). Was mucho relieved to read on...
quilt will be gorgeous, as usual!
goodness that will be cuter than cute, and its a good thing for hubbys that can do math, eh? yippee
I like the fabric you choose and looking forward to seeing how the end product will look like.
