I've been trying to get myself organised for some time and actually plan this quilt along...but it's now well into October and my intended start date of September has long gone. Oops.
Anyway - here's the deal. The mock up of a quilt above uses a LOT of scrap squares. There's a lot of sewing 2.5 inch squares together, but it's just 2 blocks and it's pretty simple. Plus - scrappy quilts are forgiving when it comes to mis-matched points, so you don't have to stress about being perfect. I'm not perfect, my points are pretty bad. Always. I've given up really caring, because I get too stressed and lose the love for a project.
Here's what you'll need -
Each 14 inch finished block is made up of 49 2.5 inch squares. Block A is 49 scrap squares. Block B is 29 scrap squares plus 12 black ones and 8 blue ones (in this case - you can choose different colours, but black/charcoal grey works well for contrast - a very dark colour is best for the outer ring).
If you decide to the layout above (which ends up at approx twin sized, or 70 x 98 inches) you will need the following;
PLEASE NOTE EDITED FABRIC REQUIREMENTS - I made a booboo with the amount of yardage you needed for the solids, and put the strips as inches not strips. I'm sorry (ducks to avoid the cutting mats and stuff thrown at my head)
Thank you to LuAnn for pointing out my mistake.
1,375 2.5 inch scrap squares
204 black squares (approx 14 strips of WOF strips 2.5 inches wide/35 inches of fabric - at 40 inches wide)
136 blue squares (or 9 WOF strips 2.5 inches wide/23 inches of fabric - at 40 inches wide)
But there's a smaller option........
for which you will end up with a quilt approx 70 inches square
fabrics required here are as follows;
965 scrap squares
156 black squares (or 10 x WOF strips 2.5 inches wide/25 inches of fabric at 40 inches wide)
104 blue squares (or 7 x WOF strips 2.5 inches wide/18 inches of fabric at 40 inches wide)

Anyone in? Or am I the only person crazy enough to give this a go ;)

I've been cutting 2 inch squares from my scraps for weeks to eventually do something like this. when are you starting?
I'm a wee bit scared and don't know if I have enough scraps, but I think I'm in. It looks fantastic!
It is so pretty! And so tempting.
I've started using my 2.5 inch scraps for hexagons which will take me years to get anywhere with. If I took on another project rather than start on the 9 tops I have waiting to be finished I will need to slap myself. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out though.
I think I might interested... I've got two other scrap projects in the long-term works...
Now strangely enough, I've been cutting 2.5" squares for the last few weeks too with no aim for them. There is a load more fabric to go too so I am pretty sure I can make at least the standard size for this.
Only question is if I am certifiably crazy enough to join. Suggestions in a hatbox please.....
Sounds like a brilliant idea! Not too sure if I have enough fabric, will have a dig this afternoon.
Holy guacamole! Just the sheer number made me pass out at my desk just now!
Looks like a good project for a "leaders and enders" approach.
So tempting!!! I'm might need my arm twisted a bit. :P
I'm already one quilt a long behind! It does look lovely though. :)
I'm interested but won't be able to do it until after Christmas. I really need to focus all my energy on finishing (ok, STARTING!) my holiday gifts!
I think after Christmas I might give this ago. I love scrappy projects and I have really gotten into the swing of cutting 2.5" after making my hexie quilt. It doesn't look like vomit to me either ;-)
I've never made a quilt before. I'm guessing it would be stupid of me to start with this one?! It's so pretty!
I've always thought of myself as a bit crazy, but I don't think I'm deluded enough to think I'd have time and patience enough for this quilt. It's a really great looking quilt, though! In spite of your use of the word "vomit" associated with it!
Sounds good, love fiddly little squares!
yes you are crazy!
This is SOO pretty!
What a gorgeous quilt - I might have to follow alongbut don't know that I have enough scraps or time at the moment to join in a quilt-along!
Crazy
The spirit is willing but the body is weak ....or vice a versa !!
Only kidding , have squares ( i've been saving them ) will sew ,I may be a slowcoach, thats all.
HHMMMM...I really nee to do something with my scraps...how about starting after Market ;-)
Very tempting - this is so happy and colorful!
I'd like to try! Is there a time limit?! May take me a while being a newbie quilter an' all that - lol
Well clearly you are crazy, but WOW!! That is some looker of a quilt. Love those black and blue diamonds. As you are crazy, go for it tiger!
am very tempted so am going to say....yes!!!!
xxx
I have more fabric than I can handle any more. I'm in, but I will probably be slow going. ( I'm a uni student and have exams/clinical placements coming up, stressful but also so exciting!)
Well, I might give it a try.
But what was it??? 1,3....... what?
Can't start until mid-Dec though...
Bookmarking for a less insane time in my life (and I need to save more scraps, anyway). I'm still working away on my FQly quilt along!!
I'm definitely in (Australia). I would LOVE to get rid of some ugly scraps! Roberta
very, very, very tempted to join in. i have loved that inspiration quilt for a long time. yours is lovely as well! i have some less than desirable fabric to use up, too. hmmmmmmmmmmm.
how much time to i have to cut the squares?? i love this quilt pattern and your colors are scrumptious katy. i want to play
I have already posted a reply but would like to add "will you be requesting updates as we go along to help us keep moving with it"? Thanks.
yes, Roberta - I'll be poking you with a pointy stick and I hope you'll do the same with me!!!
Hi My name is Denise and I am new to quilt blogs and quilt alongs. I am finding some neat quilt blogs. Anyway, I would love to join in on this quilt along (I love the quilt). What do I need to do to participate...should I have my own blog? Again, this is all new to me and I appreciate if someone could fill me in. Thanks!
Just for the name alone I'm in!!!
Oooohhh tempting, very tempting. And I love that points don't need to match - mine never do either. But that's what make my quilts all unique!
I'm in! When do we start?
Gulp! I think I'm in. I'm in. Yup, I'm in.
OK, one more crazy person ready to join the group. I'm not sure how well I'll keep up, I work full time and am trying to finish a king-size quilt, but I love the idea of this. It reminds me of the postage stamp quilt my grandmother made. I've always wanted to make one.
Yes! I'll join you! Amanda Jean mentioned it on her blog, anything she endorses must be great. Can we start now???? from Lexi in Perth WA Aust
I'm very tempted......love the groovy colours ......and do have a pile of squares already cut.......so am twisting my own arm........but have never done a blog quiltalong before so may need that explained:) But count me in! Ciao
I'm in! I started another 2.5" project but got bored with it after cutting up all the fabric so, as far as this one goes, I'm half way done with the cutting. I can't wait to start this!
Please, please a better name for a beautiful quilt... "rainbow squares" or "too many squares" or??? Thanks!
Count me in! Love scrappy squares...
I'm in. I'm sure I already have enough 2 1/2" squares already cut and ready to go.
I will definately join you...just have to finish another one first! :) It's lovely!
Fabulous quilt! Love the colors!
What a great way to use up small scraps of which I seem to have plenty. I already have quite a number of 2 1/2" squares cut so I'll cut a few dozen more and then I'll be ready to go. Love the pattern!
Have to finish one of quilts I currently working on. Then I'm so with you - lots of squares already cut (thanks to Bonnie Hunter). Look forward to future post, thanks.
I've got lots of 2.5" strips, so it wouldn't be too hard to talk myself into this one......is it too late to join?
Carolyn
ok I love this. LOVE. it make sense of all the fabric. Perfect scrap quilt.
OK, so you twisted my arm. Rather Cherie in st. Louis did. Saw her blog and now I'm hooked. I was looking for a leader/ender project and I do have 2.5" squares, so I guess I just HAVE to do it, right?? Thanks for motivating me. I only have 46 UFO's now. Dar in MO
Good Morning. :o)
I am in the process of cutting fabrics for a couple of quilts and saving all my favorite scraps, so those will be cut down to 2.5 squares and I am totally in with this quilt along!!! :o) I may be a few steps behind, but I am really looking forward to getting started!!
Thank you for creating such a fun quilt a long!!
I am having a little give a way if you would like to drop by. :o)
Sincerely - Tricia
I saw this months ago when you originally posted it on flickr and loved it, I think I am going to have to make some time to play along.
That totally sounds awesome! Definitely on my to-do list :).
I hope I get time to start this during holiday vacation! I have a lot of 2 1/2 inch scraps already, though not nearly enough. And I will bookmark this because I think it will look great in batik scraps too.
news travels slowly here to north carolina. i'm definitely going to do this because i have been feeling overwhelmed by how many scraps i'm collecting because it means i'm buying too much fabric, which i am. this is wonderful!
This looks great - count me in.
I just took my finished quilt out of the dryer. I enjoyed making it and since I already had a full box of 2.5" squares I only needed to cut the solid centers. I used an old quilt top for the backing. One that I started in the 80's. Thanks for the great idea. Picture at www.patquiltztoo.blogspot.com
I love this quilt! it's on my to-do-list too!!!!
I have had a 5" square quilt in the almost-finished stage for oh, about 3 months now... would be scared to take on something as huge as that BUT it looks amazing!!
LOVE THIS! Thanks for the inspiration - I made my own version with 2" squares... http://www.flickr.com/photos/amandasan/5965574253/
Mine's finished. I posted about it on my blog today and I've uploaded my Flickr picture. My only criticism... I should have made it larger. I love my quilt!
I finished mine, and I love it. Thanks for the idea!

Love the quilt, the name, the idea. Great way to use scraps...size it down for charity quilts.
I'm a bit late to the party but I have a stash of 2.5" squares already cut so I think I'll use this as a leader/tender project! Thanks for posting.
I love this idea! I am going to get my scrap boxes cut up soon!
Taking a break from Not Shopping and Not having any cranbery sauce or Thanksgiving din-din to do a little catching up blogland. I have a modest pile of 2.5" squares and I love your idea! I can definitely see it with black and kelly green squares, or maybe even flipped with kona snow and another strong solid.....
I"m in....keep me posted! I am working on a stash of 2,1/2 sqs...don't have enough for this yet, but getting there!

Hi Katy...Happy New Year to you.. in a few hours for us { in U.S.). I have been saving my scraps since I saw your amazing quilt!! So it has been.. two years? I have cut my scraps into 1.5"x1.5" instead. I really like small scraps. I know it is a bit crazy.. but I am so in love with this quilt you made and I am quilt along as of 2013... { a bit late}..
That is amazing! Much more fun than watching the fiscal cliff battle. I could use up a ton of scraps too!
I'm in. I have 300 scrap squares so far. This is a wonderful project. I am feeling guilty about purchasing more fabric when I have so many scraps. This will definitely help with the guilt!
Kati, thanks so much for the tutorial! I did not consider myself a scrappy kind of gal and I will admit that initially I was not in love with miss scrap vomit. However, I had inherited a pile of fabric scraps from my grandmother who can no longer quilt due to a degenerative vision problem. Your love of mixing the uglies and pretties in one place was the push I needed to give this quilt a go. I powered thru my scrap vomit quilt in record time and I am so in love! I LOVED the process of putting her together, love the size (I opted for the larger and I still have enough 2.5 squares to do another), love the mix of fabrics from my scrap bin with my grandma's scrap bin, and it makes me completely happy each night I snuggle under it on the sofa with my hubby and a glass of wine. Had to step out from my usual status as lurker to thank you for sharing this project!!
