scrappy trips

scrappy trips

I can't believe how fast this quilt top was to put together!

The insanity started on December 29th and finished on January 1st. To say I got completely obsessed was an understatement.

Now it's done I absolutely LOVE how it's turned out, it's bright, it's cheery and full of my favourite fabrics from the stash closet.

scrappy trips

Now I just need to get this baby quilted and bound and ready for snuggling under!

Join in the informal quilt along on instagram using the hashtag #scrappytripalong and join the flickr group here.

(I actually think I'm going to make more of these - just 9 blocks in a 3 x 3 layout would make excellent new baby size, at 36" square, and it'd take no time at all)

You can find links to the quiltville tutorial and a gazillion inspiring photos at the flickr group.

Oh - and Brenda and I were thinking, this is the year of the informal quilt along. A hashtag, no prizes, no sponsoring, no big deal - just sewing for the heck and the sheer joy of it. What do you think? Maybe even a new quilt every month, something simple, a free tutorial, that you can make as big or as small as you like (4 of these scrappy trips block make a 24" pillow, for example), and that uses up scraps or FQs from your stash.

I love the informality of it! I love the look of this quilt! I hope that I am able to eventually make one up as soon as I scratch off a bunch of things on the must-do list!

Just found you and bookmarked you. I've had this quilt in my to do pile for quite a while. I'll be looking for your informal quilt alongs...I can probably manage those. Love the idea of no obligations, no failures, just fun!

LOVE that idea almost as much as I love all the scrappy quilts from this group that I've been seeing. I don't think people join a QAL for the prizes anyway. We do it , or at least I do, for the sense of community we get from doing something together. Prizes make too much work for the folks hosting the QAL, and I would think that fabric shops get tired of constantly being asked for donations. Let's hear it for quilting along for the pure fun of it!

I LOVE the informal -along. This one was so fun to check in on, and entirely too tempting. I'm trying to rationalize bailing out on any number of activities and obligations in order to clear room to wail on this puppy. Yours is amazing--not surprisingly. Can't wait to see how you choose to quilt it!

I love the idea of sewing and quilting just for the fun of it!!

Your scrappy trip quilt is just gorgeous. I'm making one with Amy Butler scraps (and making scrap vomit rows via leaders and enders) but I'm already thinking of using my Denyse Schmidt scraps for yet another one. 2013 is going to be the year of the scrap buster - so yeah, I'm all for informal QALs. Love your blog - you're so inspirational.

I love that idea!!! :)

I like the idea of iQALs. It is just killing me that I am out of town during the tripalong. I want to play so bad.

Sounds like a great plan. I'd already decided to make some scrappy cushion covers - I am very bored with the ones we have at the moment!

Your quilt is so pretty. I am going to join this soon. I love the idea you and Brenda came up with.

Man the looks good! Perhaps my next one will be more stash controlled rather than scrap controlled! Loving the idea of impromptu quilt alongside :). You know I'm always up for a challenge! Especially a good quickie! Lol

A once a month fun project would be great. I love tutorials and it would be lovely to have something to look forward to.

Okay...that's just insane!!! 4 days?! Did you eat? sleep? breathe? LOL
I'm crazy jealous actually. I haven't even finished my scap vomit yet.

I like your quilt along idea. Fun.

It looks fab, love it! I'm still resisting, but then Kim at Go Go Life is having a giveaway of a jelly roll that would work perfectly for this, so if I win I'll make one...

Informal QAL sounds perfect.

I can't want to start my own Scrappy Trip Along...

It's stunning!

I cut fabrics for mine last night - if every informal quiltalong catches on like this one we'll all have a nice pile of quilts at the end of the year :)

I'm in, tho I'm going to use my Lotta Jansdotter fabric (I've got way to much of it) ~ not scrappy but it will still look great!

Carol Stearns said...

I love it. I"ve got lots of 2.5 inch squares I could use and more scraps to cut!

It is gorgeous! I tried scrappy trip and my fabrics were so very sad I just didn't continue. I think I will stick with SV. I am all for the no pressure QAL - will happily look for them.

I am determined to stash-bust this year, so I'm up for anything that helps - although batting giveaways will more than welcome!

I totally loved the spontaneity of this quilt along! And I might not do all of them but having a fun project just jump out at me form time to time would be great fun. I am off to keep working on my blocks, I will not be left behind...lol!

It's absolutely wonderful! I've joined the Flickr group, but haven't started yet! Love how informal the group is!

I think I love yours more than I love mine. I didn't think this was possible!

Thank you for all the encouragement over on Instagram. It's been a hoot, hasn't it?

Mandalin said...

yay for informal quiltalongs! Sure, I love prizes, but I don't need one to be enticed to sew! :D

LOVE yours + Brenda's idea of 2013 being the year of the informal quilt-along. Seeing the #scrappytripalong pics on my instagram feed has been so great, I've loved seeing what everyone is making - without feeling like I've had to join in too, since I'm trying hard to finish my WIP-mountain.

Instagram and flickr are perfect for spreading the word and sharing the love, with no pressure to join in or if you do, to take perfect pics for blog posts. And I really like the idea too, of posting extra ideas within a quilt-along - like a cushion-cover.

thanks so much for sharing all your gorgeous pics and for always being so encouraging to the sew-ers-of-instagram. Cat x

Love your quilt. I've been trying very hard to resist the call of the scrappytripalong but caved in yesterday and pulled out some fabrics for a cushion. Not sure I can keep to that if it 's that much fun, though.

An informal sew-a-long 2013 sounds good as sometimes it's difficult to commit to a big quilt and a time frame.

Anna said...

Informal sounds great! I am just venturing out to tidy the studio, but actually I am looking for fabrics to use in my ScrappyTripAlong! Shhhh don't tell anyone!

peacedgoods said...

sounds like fun!!! I'm comitted to using up some of my stash this year (and finishing my SV)so i gotta get crackalacking.

It's wonderful! I love informal QAL's as I'm so slow that everyone has made another four quilts by the time mine is ready quilt...

Love it! Seriously, love it.

I really love yours. It's so bright and cheery! I really would love the idea of an informal quilt-along each month. Instagram is about all I have time to take photos with anyways, if I want to have time to sew.

Love your quilt. This is something I could use for my Kaffe Fassett stash.

It has been so fun to follow this already! Gorgeous quilt and I love your idea about having a laid back approach to things this year, yes please!!

I loved your SV quilt and now I love this one equally well! I actually saw this Quiltville tutorial months ago as I frequently look at Bonnie's blog. Was tempted to try the blocks myself but resisted as I had too many other projects on the go. Now your group has set Flickr-land on fire making the most wonderful Scrappy Trip Along quilts I am finding it even harder to resist. Perhaps I'll dip my toe on the water and try a couple of blocks?

Sarah said...

OMG! It's sooooo gorgeous! The colours are just beautiful. I simply love this quilt. :-)

Love this quilt Katy - again, stop with the temptation girl!! Like the sound of an informal quilt along.

I have seen this sew-along pop up everywhere, and informal is definitely the way to classify it - how did this begin? Where is its home? How do I join? How mysterious!

Can I say how beautiful yours turned out? My favorite. It's been fun watching, maybe I will catch it in time the next time around!

I love it! All of it! The quilt, the idea of the QAL, and especially of a QAL every month (or quarter, or whatever). I don't get nearly enough time sewing these days, but I love to see what everyone else is doing--keeps me inspired!
