crossing off the list

This morning the Timeless Treasures Sketch flannel I ordered from Brenda arrived to back the scrappy trip along Christmas quilt.

For the first time ever I actually pre-washed this flannel.  I've never used just flannel as a quilt back before (I have made plenty of quilts using it, but never backed a biggish quilt in just flannel), and the colour I chose was very bright (lipstick), so I was more worried about colour bleeds than shrinking, but I measured the width of the flannel before it was washed and after just to see what happened.

I'm glad I pre-washed it, it really didn't taken long, and once washed the flannel is even softer than it was when I opened the package. It fluffed right up and has the most beautiful hand.

It did shrink too. Before washing it was 43' wide, and after washing (on a warm wash, and tumble drying on warm too) it ended up at 41". That's quite a lot of shrinkage, which is expected with flannel. I wasn't surprised, but it has made me think in future I'll probably pre-wash, just to be safe.

For my scrappy trips quilt (which is 60" x 72" and 30 blocks) I ordered 4.5 yards of flannel, and it's the perfect amount after washing, there's enough overage for the long armer to deal with but not so much that I'm thinking I could have gotten away with a touch less.

Brenda has 15% off everything in store using the coupon code MOVING15. It's good through wednesday (February 6th). It's also good on sale stuff too, and if you spend over $50 US shoppers will get free shipping too which is a nice saving. Take advantage of the coupon and grab some of these flannels now, they're a really good quality and the colours are wonderful. I got a few yards of charcoal to stash away, for emergencies, of course.

I stocked up on dots at the weekend to take advantage of the 15% off coupon, I'm going to use this dot to bind the scrappy christmas quilt (it's also called lipstick!)

I've also been lucky enough to play with some of Jeni's new fabric for Art Gallery Fabrics and the new Timeless Treasures ziggy chevrons. Both of these collections should be in stores any time now, the Ziggy's are in store at Fat Quarter Shop already. This big pillow be a tutorial on the Sizzix blog next monday (with some tips on sewing curves). I am absolutely loving those 2 collections together. They match so well, like they were destined to be together. Today has been freezing cold, windy and snowing, and Ginge is (still) off school with the nasty flu bug that has been going around his school like wild fire. Having this sunshiny project on my desk is brightening my day no end.

Today is feeling like a good day - dinner is in the crock pot, and making me feel hungry already, I've got plenty done despite my poorly little Ginge, and the big fat snowflakes that are falling outside make me all cozy and warm feeling (it helps I have the furnace child close by!) I feel like I'm getting things crossed off my to-do list, which is such a great feeling.

Have a wonderful Tuesday, what are you doing today?

Beautiful quilt. I really love the quilt underneath it too. What quilt is that? I am working today but I did get up at 4:30 to get a little quilting time in before work. Reading your post (while taking a break at work) makes me want to go home and quilt right now! I love my crock pot. It is how I do most weekday meals.

Looking good on the flannel quilt front, love that colour, and I will be checking out your curved pieicing advice closely next week. Finished most of my cleaning, hate that, but now I can do some fun sewing, yay! I'm going to make some more pouches out of the spare quilt blocks i've got knocking around, using your Sizzix tute from the other week, and then some Siblings Together sewing. Should keep me busy until nursery kick out time! x

Today I work, but then am off for a few days. I worked on my hexagons last night for your quilt along. Nearly done joining them all. Your scrappy trip will be fabulous and the backing is delicious. Happy day to you ; )

I'm managing to resist the lure of the Sketch flannel but it's hard! I can't wait to see your quilt finished, it's going to be wonderful! Hope Ginge gets better soon x

I am hoping to finish one of my auction quilt tops today and start on the second. It's so nice to just sit down and sew I haven't had much time for it lately. Thanks for sharing about your flannel pre-washing I should definitely do that next time I'm backing with it.

Good to know on the flannel shrinkage! Hope furnace child feels better soon, and doesn't share his heat generating germs in the meantime!

lovin' the look of those chevrons, they look like they have the sketch pattern in them! I'm making pillow cases today, I made one yesterday and am hooked. Great way to attack the stash!

I ordered yards and yards of the flannel too for backings, nice savings! And I always was flannels but I wouldn't have guessed 2 full inches, glad I added to the yardage for stashing,

Those fabrics are beautiful! I liked Jeni's fabrics when I first saw them, but wasn't quite sure about all of them and what to do, but you have mixed them perfectly with the chevrons. I love the colours! The cold and snow and snuggling sound divine. It was 34*C here in South Australia today! Too hot for me. I hope your son is feeling better soon. It's horrible when they're sick for a long time.
